UTNA Press Release - Washington DC, June 29, 2021

The Union of Tigreans in North America (UTNA) wants to express its heartfelt congratulations to the people of Tigray, the Tigray Defense Forces (TDF), the Tigray Government and all Tigrayan political parties for defeating their enemies, and for the return of their elected Government to Mekelle.

UTNA sends out a special congratulations to its Tegaru Diaspora, especially to our Tegaru youth all over the world, for their relentless and tireless participation in the struggle to free and protect Tigray. This triumph is equally yours.

The gallant TDF and the legally elected Government of Tigray reclaimed the capital city of Mekelle on June 28, 2021, after eight long months of excruciating bombardments, mass executions, gang rapes and daily looting of its people, by Ethiopian and Eritrean soldiers, and Amhara Regional forces, militia and the FANO vigilante group.

Following the categorical defeat of the Ethiopian and Eritrean forces by TDF, dictators Abiy Ahmed and Isaias Afeworki, ordered their military to confiscate privately owned vehicles and their drivers to transport their loot from Mekelle — including bank notes from all banks — and left the city with no money in its coffers for the people to use and trade in.

The Tigrayan people have suffered terribly for too long, while the international community remained inactive. It now has a responsibility to support the rehabilitation of Tigray, and bring all those involved in genocide, mass rape and massacres to justice.

UTNA calls on all Tegaru diaspora to keep their unity and prepare for the second phase of our battle, which is to rebuild and rehabilitate Tigray.

UTNA also calls on all Tegaru youth in Tigray to stay vigilant for any of Abiy Ahmed and Isaias Afeworkis’ remaining conscripts and to adhere to the instructions and guidelines of the elected Government of Tigray.
